18h UTC; THURSDAY, 1 AUGUST 2013: With today being the start of the Wisconsin State Fair, tomorrow that of the Indiana State Fair and Monday being the rather obliquely-named Civic Holiday in portions of Canada, it ought also be worth noting that today week begins state fairs in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri ... a week after that, the Canadian National Exhibition, eh (a/k/a "The CNE" or "The Ex") up Toronto way ... and yet another week after, the Minnesota State Fair, something of an annual ritual of sorts for moi.

Which, in any case, is enough for Your Correspondent to wonder if perhaps the Minnesota State Fair ought extend its 12-day run, ending on Labour Day in line with long-established tradition, by a week to maximise its attendance numbers, which since 1955 have perennially exceeded 1 million visitors run-of-fair (and for the record, the Minnesota State Fair had a 10-day run from 1939, when the tradition of closing on Labour Day was established, until 1971, with an 11-day run the rule from 1972 to 1974 and the current 12-day run established in 1975)--no doubt giving The Great Minnesota Get-Together some competition in the long-run stakes with the 18-day run of "The Ex" and the 17-day such of the Indiana State Fair.

(BTW, the longest overall run of a state fair is the 26-day such of the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, generally from the end of September well into October; last year's such being especially memorable for the loss to fire of its longtime mascot, "Big Tex," three days prior to its close.)

Come to think of it, why exactly would such a modestly-sized state like Indiana need 17 days for their State Fair when its neighbours are satisfied with 11-day runs? (BTW, the shortest run of any State Fair is that of the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, with a five-day run essentially coincident with the Labour Day long weekend; perhaps put it down to sparsity of population.)

One Constitutional Amendment that "Tea Party," "9/12" and "Christian Patriot" types would also love to see for Thy Dear and Lovely Nation, in particular the Defence of Her National Character and Identity as a Sovereign Peculiar Among the Nations (as well as such implying a natural interconnexion vis-a-vis said National and Sovereign Identity and ekonomesie vryheid met Amerikaanse eienskappe as suggests where the defence of one is presumed applying automatically to the other), is one modelled on Article 12 of the Cuban Constitution of 1992, as thus:
The Republic of Cuba espouses the principles of anti-imperialism and internationalism, and

a) ratifies its aspirations to a valid, true and dignified peace for all states, big or small, weak or powerful, based on respect for the independence and sovereignty of the peoples and the right to self-determination;

b) establishes its international relations based on the principles of equality of rights, self-determination of the peoples, territorial integrity, independence of states, international cooperation for mutual and equitable benefit and interest, peaceful settlement of disputes on an equal footing and based on respect and the other principles proclaimed in the United Nations Charter and in other international treaties which Cuba is a party to;

c) reaffirms its desire for integration and cooperation with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, whose common identity and historical need to advance united on the road to economic and political integration for the attainment of true independence would allow us to achieve our rightful place in the world;

d) advocates the unity of all Third World countries in the face of the neocolonialist and imperialist policy which seeks to limit and subordinate the sovereignty of our peoples, and worsen the economic conditions of exploitation and oppression of the underdeveloped nations;

e) condemns imperialism, the promoter and supporter of all fascist, colonialist, neocolonialist and racist manifestations, as the main force of aggression and of war, and the worst enemy of the peoples;

f) repudiates direct or indirect intervention in the internal and external affairs of any state and, therefore, also repudiates armed aggression, economic blockade, as well as any other kind of economic or political coercion, physical violence against people residing in other countries, or any other type of interference with or aggression against the integrity of states and the political, economic and cultural elements of nations;

g) rejects the violation of the inalienable and sovereign right of all states to regulate the use and benefits of telecommunications in their territory, according to universal practice and international agreements which they have signed;

h) considers wars of aggression and of conquest international crimes; recognizes the legitimacy of the struggle for national liberation, as well as of armed resistance to aggression; and considers that its solidarity with those under attack and with the peoples that struggle for their liberation and self-determination constitutes its internationalist duty;

i) bases its relations with those countries building socialism on fraternal friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, founded on the common objectives of the construction of a new society; [and]

j) maintains friendly relations with those countries which – although having a different political, social and economic system – respect its sovereignty, observe the rules of coexistence among states and the principles of mutual conveniences, and adopt an attitude of reciprocity with our country.
Not to mention reinforcing the aforementioned interconnexion, howbeit flawed, with another pet "Tea Party" delusion implying that "Co-Prosperity" based on free trade is the new AmeriKKKan model for foreign development and aid. All the while unaware of Japan's so-called "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," on which the preceding delusion is somehow modelled, having been structurally flawed from the get-go so as to benefit the zaibatsu cartels at the expense of the peoples in such territories expected to "benefit" under Japanese control and dominance (in particular such as were under Eurocentrist colonial dominion, which Japan saw as being detrimental to Asian interests), primarily as sources of raw material and cheap labour.
