I'll only say at this time that the link is a surprise.

17h57 UTC; WEDNESDAY, 20 AUGUST 2014: In this the last post before I take a short hiatus preparatory to my annual presence at the Minnesota State Fair next week, Your Correspondent feels it best to bring up for discussion the following worthwhile, yet underappreciated, topics made even more so because of the Ongoing Unfortunate Events in a certain St. Louis suburb whose name is already reeking of the hackneyed, or close to it:
  • With certain especially hard-wired "Tea Party"-deluded governors invoking "states' rights" to decline Federal assistance for expanding Medicaid, has anybody considered where the REAL reason for so refusing is a desire to seek Federal waivers for converting Medicaid into a voucher-based scheme seeking (in theory) to "empower the government-dependent" into embracing ekonomesie vryheid van ons styl as an ur-Great White Father, with the Invisible Hand of the Marketplace being an agent of said empowerment (and without any sort of checks or balances to protect the interests of the State, taxpayers and health insurers alike, in effect expecting self-regulation based solely on "gentlemens' agreements" to be more than adequate--until it emerges that such condones cartel behaviour)?
  • How do we know that the monsoonal rains and flooding afflicting Phoenix and environs of late isn;t really some form of Divine Judgment upon Maricopa County, Arizona for continuing to put up with the racist and neo-Fascist misadventures of Sheriff Joe Arapio in his Luscious Glory of closeted apologia for the Suid-Afrikaanse Polisie in the Luscious Glory of apartheid, especially in its most sadistically-depraved displays such as at Sharpeville and Soweto?
  • Memo to the "Drill, Baby, DRILL!!" Zealots and True Believers: If crude-oil prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), where futures on crude oil, natural gas and distillates are traded (electronically more so these says), continue to fall (yesterday closing at $94.48/bbl. for West Texas Intermediate, the American crude oil benchmark of choice) as they have been of late, it looks likely that any such actions you seek as a Holy of Holies towards prosperity reclaimed are unlikely to be profitable, especially so in the Bakken/Three Forks fields in North Dakota and Montana as have been the crude-oil Eldorado of recent years. (Not to mention misfortune befalling the region of late, including a lightning strike hitting crude oil storage tanks, luckily stopping short of exploding and causing a serious fire with acrid black smoke into the heavens.)
And as I said at the beginning, Your Correspondent now goes on hiatus vis-a-vis the Minnesota State Fair and his annual presence there. So please don't weep for me in my absence; I do plan to be back after Labour Day.

So till next time, folks: "73"
