18h03 UTC; MONDAY, 20 FEBRUARY 2012: By way of DailyNK.com, a Seoul-based online gazetta staffed by North Korean exiles providing a more balanced and impartial reportage of the so-called "Democratic People's Republic of Korea," comes the preceding North Korean propaganda poster which proclaims at the top "Accept the Last Instructions of Great Leader Kim Jong Il" (whatever they were; one report suggests they were supposed to be revealed on the 16th as part of the forced loyalty exercises coincident with what would have been his 70th birthday) ... and, at the bottom, "Create a Year Filled with Powerful Victory, a Heyday for Glorious Revival!"; the red banners on the lower left-hand side proclaim hackeneyed appeals to "defend the memory of Suryong ["Eternal Leader" Kim Il Sung] with our lives" and "act as human bombs and shields in defence of the Nation."

The which I bring up in recalling certain smart-alecky remarks made by a certain Sarah Palin just before Thanksgiving 2010 on Glenn Beck's radio programme which called for her dear lovely "REAL AmeriKKKans" to rally round North Korea as opposed to the traditional ally of South Korea during a period of exceptionally heated tensions on either side of the Demilitarised Zone as got worse when North Korea shelled a disputed offshore island in South Korean territorial waters, with casualties ensuing ... and made even more laughably obnoxious now that South Korea, notwithstanding the inevitable North Korean threats and warnings of serious reprisals against South Korean/American "lackeyism," just concluded another series of live-fire naval drills in disputed territorial waters.

And which should serve as a clear and present warning of the demented excesses certain RepubliKKKan Presidential wannabes have in mind (Rick Santorum in particular) about essentially reducing the Presidential role to one of a superdivine "Prophet, Seer and Revelator" who may be power mad and worse, all the while excusing his acts, deeds and exploits as being in service to His Name and Will. "Liberty is not safe where the people are not watchful."

(And we know, don't we, boys and girls, what makes this danger all the more inherent?)

On a different note, Your Correspondent congratulates the Ogalala Sioux Nation on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for filing a Federal lawsuit against four major brewers, four beer stores in Whiteclay, Nebraska (population 12), just inside the Nebraska line from South Dakota, and their wholesale distributors in Federal court as seeks $500 million in compensation and damages for conspiring to condone the smuggling of alcoholic beverages onto the Pine Ridge Reservation, where sale and consumption of alcohol is illegal, with beer sales at levels disproportionate to what the Cornhusker State's Liquor Control Board would condone (as a matter of fact, the suit notes that Fireclay has no on-premise licences as opposed to the four beer stores, selling between them an estimated 13,000 cans of beer a day).

Which, in any case, helps explain why Shannon County, South Dakota (on which the Pine Ridge Reservation is located) is the third-poorest such in the country, with more than half its residents living below the poverty line, 80% unemployment, limited socioeconomic opportunities on reservation lands, an alcoholism rate of some 85% of the population, one in four infants born thereon being diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Syndrome, with attendant risk of birth defects and learning/cognitive disorders, and abnormally high rates of violent crime and self-slaughter.
