15h UTC; SATURDAY, 17 AUGUST 2013: Is it just me, or does it seem possible that, thanks to the magic of CGI animation being integratable into live action, the face of Mr. Veritably Clean (yes, that's his full name and stylee) in recent TV adverts for Mr. Clean looks like Yul Brenner as he appeared in The King and I on both Broadway and in the cinema?

With a Federal court judge ruling that the NYPD's "stop-and-frisk" device as a "preemptive" tactic tended to target blacks and Hispanics all too heavily (and based on latent stereotypes of their being supposedly more prone to "criminal tendencies"), how do we know there weren't a few whites thus subjected to the indignity--especially so "poor whites" found in certain tourist areas where their presence would be seen as "repulsive" and "devaluing"?

Talk about "devaluing," readers: One of the more pathetically blatant canards the more blatant specimens of racist (especially so John Birchers, "Tea Party" and "Christian Patriot" types) have about National Minorities moving into heretofore traditionally white working-class-dominant neighbourhoods is the fear that the presence of the minority du jour (these days, the threat being homosexuals and the transgendered) in same "risks serious dilution of property values" to the point of "blight" and worse likely ensuing within measurable distance, leaving such specimens of hubris-weighted "poor whites" traditionally resident with no choice but to resort to "blockbusting" ahead of wholesale relocation to suburbia. Or even exurbia.

Unfortunately, there's some problems with this line of thought:
  • The Federal Fair Housing Act 1968, as amended, prohibits the use of "blockbusting" as a scare tactic in the sale or offering of real properties vis-a-vis Identifiable National Minorities under pain of fines and/or penal servitude.
  • More likely than not, the paranoia about "dilution of property values" relative to minorities moving in lacks any credible substance apart from "friend-of-a-friend" anecdotal evidence; a more accurate barometer of what property values are worth would be the property assessments used to calculate property taxes, the which are public record.
  • Moving from the obnoxious to the stupid, it's possible that the property values at supposed "risk of dilution" may themselves be grossly exaggerated out of warped racial and civic pride, with a more realistic value perhaps being much lower than claimed (especially after factoring in the likes of loss of jobs in the neighbourhood, past migratory patterns, changing socioeconomic demographics, inflation, &c.)
In any case, Reality is not a strong point with such specimens of misguided arrogance as don't realise that their property may really be worth much less than they claim it to be. And even more so when they cry "There goes the neighbourhood!" when such types they see as "undesirable" move in as part of their desire to achieve their share of The American Dream.

For our friends of the "AmeriKKKa Should Be More Like China" persuasion
comes news, by way of BBC Monitoring, earlier this past week about calls by the Chinese Government to knock it off when it comes to lavish State-sponsored galas:
A central government circular released on Tuesday warns of "severe punishment" for local government officials who spend public funds on extravagant official celebrations and pay a fortune for high-cost celebrities at galas.

"Evening galas, especially those funded with state finances, easily encourage unhealthy practices and harm the image of the party and the government, and there are many public complaints about this," says the circular.

The move is the latest step in Chinese President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-extravagance campaign.

"Our country still has 128 million people living below the poverty line, and per capita GDP is still behind in world rankings. With slowing fiscal revenue growth and rising demand for livelihood improvement, governments at all levels should firmly establish a mentality of living frugally and use limited funds where they are needed most by the masses," comments the
People's Daily.

The circular also calls for restrictions of the number of variety shows broadcast on satellite television stations.

It even encourages the media to expose television stations that host over-expensive variety shows, as well as entertainers who give "perfunctory performances" but cancel at the last moment or demand high wages, notes
The Beijing News.
(And you thought certain "Tea Party" types calling on the media to challenge the loyalty and/or "patriot love," or supposed want thereof, among "liberals" and other "enemies of the people" was getting rather blatant....)

As the 2013-2014 school term gets underway nationwide, Your Correspondent has to wonder if there will be rather obnoxious demands made of conservative ideologues, especially such of "Tea Party," "9/12" and "Christian Patriot" inclinations seeing welfare dependency as a "blight" and "enslaving" to the point of "endangering Our Dear and Lovely Nation" and its presumed interconnexion to ekonomesie vryheid met Amerikaanse eienskappe, to require mandatory participation in School-to-Work schemes for such students coming from backgrounds deemed "chronically and habitually dependent upon government," the desire therefor being one of weaning them off "dependency" and into "developing healthy respect for Industry, Self-Reliance, Personal Responsibility, Thrift based on Cash Economy and a Wholesome and Simple Home Life" throughout.

Which these same elements insist is best achieved through an ideologically-driven approach towards School-to-Work (cf. "political instruction" as was common in workplaces and the military back when the then-Soviet Union was to be seen as one with Emmanuel Goldstein in Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four) rather than one which emphasised the practical and the relevant, and without clear explanation for the "why and wherefore" save for flawed or otherwise fictitious "studies" existing but as vapourware. And without due regard for the psychological or even emotional harm likely to emerge under an ideologically-driven model as incorporates Scientologist mind-control techniques, overdoes it on jingoism and nativism, requires "advanced study" of especially the likes of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and/or Atlas Shrugged, or even embraces the model of Afrikaner Economic Movement byproducts such as the Reddingsdaadbond ("Rescue Action League") movement whose ideal under the banner inscribed 'n Volk red homself ("a people rescuing itself") is itself reinforced, doublethink-stylee, with Jucheism's Guiding Doctrine that "Man is the Master of Everything, and decides Everything."

And at taxpayer expense, besides! So where's the outrage, people?!
