17h55 UTC; WEDNESDAY, 1 FEBRUARY 2012: Certain specimens of overbaked conservative Zealotry and True Belief, in the presumed name of Common Sense, are afraid that the common rabble who file complaints taking issue with False, Misleading or Deceptive Advertising to consumer-protection agencies (among them the Better Business Bureau) may be "showing reckless disregard for certain rights, privileges and powers" entitled advertisers as of Unwritten Custom and Tradition, as in those regarding Commercial Free Speech, Conducting a Trade/Earning a Livelihood Without Undue Interference and ("most importantly," as the patsy would have it) Privacy (especially out of fear that Properitary Trade Secrets might be exposed to the point of causing Undue Harm or Distress to the company whose advertising is at issue here).
Which, in effect, expects the poor to adopt a "See Something, Say Nothing" approach and attitude out of a manufactured fear that their complaints could wind up preventing their getting jobs, credit or housing because of "outspoken tendencies," with the likelihood of "clear and present danger" of such cascading out of control and forcing whole companies to close suddenly and without warning, leaving many thousands of people out of work.
In any event, I mention this (with the unlikely overtones of Monty Python's "Crunchy Frog" routine throughout) in view of where Rogers Communications, Canada's largest broadband media company, is invoking the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to challenge provisions of Canada's Competition Act mandating "truth in advertising" before the Supreme Court of Canada on the grounds that the right to "commercial free speech" trumps protecting consumer interest and welfare. (Given past precedent--as in a 1983 Supreme Court of Canada ruling upholding provisions of the Quebec Consumer Protection Act banning outright all advertising targeting children, contending that protecting public interest and welfare trumps perceived "free speech" arguments--don't expect the case to go well for Rogers.)
But in any case, expect conservative prolefeeders wholesale to go after this one, especially playing the "it CAN happen here!" meme and the danger such actions could pose to ekonomesie vryheid met Amerikaanse eienskappe "gebore ons die Volk, die Volk te doen" in relation to Our National and Sovereign Identity as a Peculiar Among the Nations, the two coextant For Mutual Benefit as per Established and Unwritten Tradition. And to overdo it with reckless and utter disregard for Truth.
(Quebec's rationale for the blanket ban on children's advertising is that children cannot expect to make wise purchasing decisions without needlessly annoying their parents to the point of harrassment or causing nuisance, which can be made worse when advertisers push the element of "pester power" as a tool, e.g., with phrases such as "ask your parents to buy ..." in advertising.)

Meanwhile, I suppose you've heard about the so-called "People for the 'Ethical' Treatment of Animals" (PETA) seeking to extend the application of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution (as banned slavery and "involuntary servitude", a/k/a "peonage") to the inmates of zoos, aquariums, marine-life parks and dolphin-swim venues ... the which, if anything, amounts to another of their exercises in absurdity packaged as "winning of hearts and minds" exercises. (Sea World, for its part, is seeking to have the action dismissed as being rather frivolous in its tone and language.)

It's probably just me, but whenever I listen to "Beautiful Isle of Dreams" by The Springfields, vintage 1964, in online radio, I couldn't help but imagine such being used by Miami radio station WIOD (the call standing for "Wonderful Isle of Dreams") as its signature tune, so long as "Beautiful" was replaced by "Wonderful" for the sake of compatibility with the call sign. (Nowadays, WIOD is news and conservative talkback.)

Make no mistake about it: "Tea Party" and GOP prolefeed hath this particular fondness for manipulating the power of words, phrases and expressions as a "winning of hearts and minds" tool--especially where euphemistically racist, bigoted or otherwise materially deceptive code, weasel and dogwhistle terms as risk crossing the line into dysphemistic can be deployed wholesale.
(Permit me to explain the difference, reader, in case you're wondering: Euphemisms are words, phrases or expressions as are created to deliberately avoid causing harm or offense ... and dysphemisms are such that serve the opposite purpose, as in deliberately causing harm or offense, particularly so among the sensitive and easily-offended.)
As a likely example of what to ponder, consider where the ideal of "smaller government," to "Tea Party" True Believers, is probably code for seeking to reinstate the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union as the basic law of the United States, wherein power was all the more decentralised in favour of the states.

Just be thankful that the United States isn't in the same boat this winter as Eastern Europe and parts of Japan as are seeing of late unusually heavy snowfall and cold temperatures as have seen (in the former instance) at least 48 people dead from exposure, hypothermia or lack of heat ... not to mention road and rail lines being blocked by heavy snow for days, leaving many smaller communities all the more isolated from established supply channels until relief helidrops can be established.
Which is exactly what the United States suffered through much of last winter, come to think of it.

Not many know this, but for many European and Asian air carriers, the shortest routes (as well as the most fuel-efficient) between Europe and Asia, and vice versa, happen to be "great circle" such over the general area of Alaska and the North Pole. Which explains why quite a few international carriers have an otherwise unlikely presence at the Anchorage and Fairbanks airports, usually for refuelling and crew relief.
Except, however, when certain volcanoes on the northern periphery of the pan-Pacific "Ring of Fire" volcanic network across especially southern Alaska and the Aleutians start getting active with wholesale discharge of volcanic ash and dust, with known harm to jet engine blades--not to mention spectacular sunsets from time to time. Latest example: After about a 2-1/2-year dormancy, the Mt. Cleveland volcano in Alaska has started returning to active status, which will certainly be disrupting some rather crucial "great circle" flight routes between the United States, Europe and Asia for awhile.
